Chute
It appears that this family owes its origins in county Kerry to George Chute, a soldier in the English forces sent to subdue the countryside after the rebellion of the Earl of Desmond in the sixteenth century. Various members of the Chute family held lands in county Kerry, principally in the Tralee area. Francis B. Chute, of Chute Hall, owned over 10,000 acres in the 1870s while Rev. George Chute owned over 4000 acres. Pierce Chute of Ballyroe was the proprietor of over 1100 acres at that time. Richard Chute was one of the principal lessors in the parishes of Killorglin, barony of Dunkerron North, Killaha, barony of Magunihy, Kilgarvan, barony of Glanarought and Ballymacelligott and Castleisland, barony of Trughanacmy at the time of Griffith’s Valuation. Caleb Chute was leasing property in the parish of Dromod, barony of Iveragh, at the same time. Reverend George Chute was a principal lessor in the parish of Molahiffe, barony of Magunihy. The estate of Arthur B. Chute, then a minor, was one of the principal lessors in the parish of Annagh, barony of Trughanacmy. In 1863, premises in the town of Tralee, held by Daniel Curry, assignee of Richard Chute, was offered for sale in the Landed Estates Court. In 1865, rentals of lands in Trughanacmy barony and premises in Tralee, the property of Francis B. Chute, were offered for sale in the Landed Estates Court. The purchasers included Mr. Sanders of Tralee and Edward Mulchinock. Mr. Neligan bought the other lots in trust. At the time of Griffith's Valuation Arthur Chute held land in the parish of Carrigrohane, barony of East Muskerry, county Cork. In November 1877 his estate at Coolroe and Great Island, barony of East Muskerry and at Firmount, barony of Barretts, was advertised for sale. The Irish Times reported that one lot was sold and the remaining lots withdrawn.
