Eyre (Eyrecourt & Eyreville)
Giles Eyre, Eyrecourt Castle and Thomas Knutford Eyre, Eyreville, are described as resident proprietors in county Galway in 1824. John Eyre was one of the principal lessors in the parish of Dononaghta at the time of Griffith's Valuation. In June 1854 the Eyrecourt Castle estate was offered for sale in the Encumbered Estates court including the house. In June 1857, the lands of Richard Eyre and others, in the parish of Clonfert, were offered for sale in the same court. In April 1869 the Moorfield estate of John Eyre was offered for sale in the Landed Estates court. In July 1870 and November 1872 the estate of Thomas Stratford Eyre in the parish of Kiltormer, barony of Longford, was offered for sale in the Landed Estates court. It appears that Allan Pollok already owned some of this property. Thomas Stratford Eyre Jun. is described as an insolvent debtor in the sale notice. The petitioners were the Scottish National Insurance company. The Eyrecourt Castle estate of John Eyre, Senior and Junior, was offered for sale in the Land Judges court in July 1883. Some of the family later settled in the Frome area of Somerset, England. See http://www.meddows-taylor.com/Eyre.htm for an account of the Eyres.
