Gumbleton
The Gumbletons of counties Cork and Waterford are descended from the Gomeledon family of Kent. Richard Gumbleton was settled at Lismore in county Waterford in the early 18th century and purchased some of the forfeited estate of the Earl of Clancarty in the barony of Muskerry, including Ummera, in 1703. He married a Warren of Warrens Court. In 1787 one of their grandsons, Robert Warren Gumbleton, married Margaret Bowen of Oakgrove, county Cork. They had three sons: Richard of Castleview/Glanatore, John B. of Fortwilliam, county Waterford and Queenstown, and George of Belgrove. In 1775, as noted by Sadlier, Richard Gumbleton, was recorded as "of Castlerichard" and was married to a Miss Conner, sister of the then agent to the Duke of Devonshire's estates at Lismore. At the time of Griffith's Valuation John B. Gumbleton held land in the parishes of Aghabulloge, Athnowen and Aghinagh, barony of East Muskerry and Durrus and Kilcrohane, barony of West Carbery, county Cork. Richard Gumbleton held land in the parishes of Leitrim, barony of Condons and Clangibbon and Knockmourne, barony of Kinnatalloon and the Reverend George Gumbleton held land in the parish of Castlelyons, barony of Barrymore. Various members of the family, especially Georgiana, held townlands in the parish of Lismore & Mocollop, county Waterford. Richard Gumbleton held townlands in the parish of Tallow in 1851. IN 1868, over 2000 acres, the property of Henry Gumbleton in the barony of Coshmore and Coshbride, county Waterford, were offered for sale in the Landed Estates Court. In the 1870s John Richard Maxwell Gumbleton of Glenatore or Castleview, Tallow, county Waterford, owned 1,510 acres in county Cork and 1,768 acres in county Waterford while his uncle John B. Gumbleton of Queenstown owned over 800 acres in county Cork. William E. Gumbleton of Belgrove, son of George, owned 1,876 acres in county Cork and 389 acres in county Waterford. In 1885, some 200 acres leased by Richard J.M. Gumbleton to Cornelius O'Sullivan was offered for sale in the Land Judges Court. These lands were situated at Aglish in the barony of Coshmore and Coshbride, county Waterford.
