Sheehy (Cork & Limerick)
In the early 18th century the Sheehys were merchants in the cities of Limerick and Cork. They married into the MacMahon, Roche, Keating and Naish families. In the 1770s and 1780s Sheehy Esq was resident at Appletown in the parish of Mahoonagh, barony of Glenquin, county Limerick. By the time of Griffith's Valuation members of the Sheehy family held land in the parishes of Clonelty and Killeedy, barony of Glenquin and Kilmeedy, barony of Connello Upper, county Limerick. In the 1870s Edward John Sheehy of Cherrygrove, Croom owned 604 acres in the county while Edward B. Sheehy of Dublin owned 535 acres, Robert K. Sheehy of Limerick 477 acres, Roger K. Sheehy of Limerick 497 acres and John Sheehy of Shannon Grove 115 acres. It is not clear if the latter was related to the other Sheehys. In county Cork Sheehys held land in the parish of Clonfert, barony of Duhallow and William J. Sheehy of Corbally held land in the parish of Ballydeloher, barony of Barrymore, from the Newenhams of Coolmore at the time of Griffith's Valuation. Bryan Sheehy of Corbally, Glanmire owned 225 acres in that county and his cousin, Robert Sheehy of Fortwilliam, Milford, owned 511 acres. Part of the lands of Ballinrea, called Fortwilliam, amounting to 83 acres, the estate of Robert Keating Sheehy were advertised for sale in June 1875. The Sheehy estate at North and South Corbally was advertised for sale in 1871, 1872 and 1874. In June 1877 the estate of Bryan Sheehy in the barony of Connello Upper, county Limerick and the fee farm rent of lands at West Clashmorgan, barony of Barretts, county Cork were advertised for sale. The Irish Times reported that they were sold to Messers. Kerly and Lloyd, solicitors, and to Simon Creagh, junior, in trust.
