Waller (Castletown)
This branch of the Waller family are descended from Sir Hardress Waller, a Cromwellian soldier, who acquired Castletown, parish of Ardcanny, county Limerick, through his marriage with Elizabeth Dowdall of Kilfinny, county Limerick. Their grandson John Waller married Elizabeth Dickson of Ballybracken, county Cork, granddaughter of Edward Bolton. Bolton Waller of Castletown and Shannon Grove, a barrister born in 1769 was a grandson of John and Elizabeth Waller. Bolton Waller died in 1854 and is recorded in Griffith's Valuation as the immediate lessor of one townland in each of the parishes of Ardcanny and Kilcornan, barony of Kenry. However his son and heir the Reverend William Waller held a large estate in the barony of Kenry in the early 1850s mainly in the parish of Kilcornan. He also held at least seven townlands in the parish of Croagh, barony of Connelloe Lower. Some of his property is recorded in Griffith's Valuation as being in the Court of Chancery. His son the Reverend Thomas John Waller of Castletown and rector of Kilcornan still owned 6,636 acres in county Limerick in the 1870s. Over 460 acres of the the Waller estate at Ringmoylan and Ballynacourty, barony of Kenry, was advertised for sale in February 1866. John Thomas Waller, grandson of the Reverend Thomas sold Castletown in 1936. As he had no children the male representation of the family passed to the descendants of John Waller a younger son of Bolton Waller. John Waller succeeded to Shannon Grove and his great grandson Hugh Bolton Waller of Dromore Castle, county Kerry, was the main family representative in the 1970s.
