Godfrey (Kilcolman)
According to Smith, the first Godfrey to settle in Kerry was John, who was granted an estate under the Act of Settlement in the reign of Charles II. The Irish Tourist Association surveyor in the early 1940s suggests that Sir John came from Romney in Kent. Sir William Godfrey was the holder of many townlands in the parish of Kilcolman at the time of Griffith's Valuation. He also leased lands in the parishes of Killorglin and Kiltallagh. In 1854, over 7000 acres of the Cronin estate, in which Sir William Godfrey and hs wife Maria Teresa had an interest, were offered for sale in the Encumbered Estates Court. Further property, mostly in county Cork, was offered for sale in October of the same year. Sir John Godfrey's estate in county Kerry amounted to almost 6000 acres in the 1870s as well as over 100 acres in county Cork.
