Winn

The Winns were originally a Yorkshire family. Their main seat was at Nostell Priory, near Wakefield. George Allanson Winn received the title Baron Headley in the Peerage of Ireland in the 1790s. Their estate amounted to over 25,000 acres in county Kerry in the 1870s, augmented by marriages into Kerry families including the Blennerhassetts. At the time of Griffith’s Valuation the estate was among the principal lessors in the parishes of Aghadoe, barony of Magunihy, Glanbehy, barony of Iveragh and Castleisland, barony of Trughanacmy. In 1877 over 80 acres held by Daniel O'Shea on lease from Lady Headley's estate, was offered for sale in the Landed Estates Court. In the 1880s Bateman reported that the Kerry estate was over 12,700 acres. Over 13,000 acres of the Winn estate was acquired by the Congested Districts Board in 1907.
