Crosbie (Ballyheige)

Reverend John Crosbie, bishop of Ardfert in the early 1600s, was the common ancestor of the Crosbies of Ardfert (Earls of Glandore) and the Crosbies of Ballyheige. The lands he acquired had previously been the property of the Cantillon family. Pierce and Margaret Crosbie were among the principal lessors in the parish of Ballyheige, at the time of Griffith's Valuation. The representatives of Pierce Crosbie held several townlands in the parish of Aghavallen, barony of Iraghticonnor, at the same time. The representatives of James Crosbie held several townlands in the parish of Killehenny in the same barony. 435 acres of James Crosbie's estate had been offered for sale in the Encumbered Estates Court in July 1850. In 1859, lands in the baronies of Clanmaurice and Iraghticonnor, formerly in the hands of Francis McDonnell Crosbie, were offered for sale in the Landed Estates Court. The Ballyheige estate amounted to over 13,000 acres in the 1870s.
