Estate(s)

Name Description
Daly (Castledaly) The Dalys were settled at Kilcleagh, county Westmeath, in the 17th century. Joseph Daly conformed to the Established Church in 1719 and changed the name of the property to Castledaly. O’Brien writes that his son Denis built the present house and was succeeded by his son Joseph Morgan Daly. On his death in 1838 his son another Denis Daly succeeded. The Daly estate of over 2,800 acres was for sale in the Encumbered Estates Court in November 1850 (Freeman’s Journal, 23 Oct 1850). The estate was for sale in 13 lots but only three were sold on this occasion lots 1, 2 and 13. The latter was the house and demesne of Castledaly sold to Mr Kane, a solicitor, at £9,400 for a Scotch capitalist, [George McDonnell]. (The Gardener’s Chronicle and Agricultural Gazette, 1850, 339). It was later bought by Thomas Scruton Odell. The remaining 10 lots were for sale on 25 May 1852 and 19 November 1857.
McDonnell (Castledaly) George McDonnell bought Castledaly and Aghavoneen, 554 acres in the parish of Kilcleagh, county Westmeath, in November 1850 from the sale of the estate of Denis Daly. According to The Gardener’s Chronicle and Agricultural Gazette 1850, page 339, Lot 13 was sold to Mr Kane, a solicitor, representing a Scotch capitalist, who paid £9,400 for the house and 554 acres of demesne. According to O’Brien George McDonnell became a bankrupt ten years later. The property was then sold to Thomas Scruton Odell.
O'Dell/Odell (Kilcleagh) Thomas Scruton Odell bought Castledaly, Moate, County Westmeath, in the late 1860s. He was the son of Thomas Alexander Odell and was born in 1829. In 1864 he married Madeline Roe of Coolfinn, Queen’s County (Laois) and died in 1869. In the mid-1870s Mrs Odell of Kilcleagh owned 554 acres in County Westmeath. Her son Major Thomas Smyth Odelll married Henrietta Urquhart of Strawberryhill, King’s County (Offaly) in 1895. Thomas Urquhart, born 1898, was their child.
