Dogherty (Redcastle) | James S. Dogherty was among the principal lessors in the parishes of Moville Upper, barony of Inishowen East and Clonleigh, barony of Raphoe North, County Donegal, at the time of Griffith’s Valuation in the 1850s. Richard Doherty, formerly a professor in Queen’s College, Galway, was recorded as the owner of almost 7000 acres in County Donegal in the 1870s. |
Cochrane (Inishowen) | In the 1870s Hussey de Burgh recorded Richard Cochrane of Springfield, Quigley’s Point as the owner of over 600 acres in County Donegal. He was leasing townlands in the parish of Muff at the time of Griffiths Valuation in the 1850s and may in turn have been leasing property from the Marquis of Donegall’s estate. Burke suggests that the Cochranes acquired lands at Red Castle through marriage with Elizabeth Doherty, daughter of Richard Doherty. |
