Lopdell
A family who came to Ireland in the mid 17th century and purchased land in county Galway. They were settled in the Athenry locality by the mid 18th century. The house at Fiddane had previously been part of the Blake Forster estate but it came into the lands of the Lopdell family in the mid-18th century. In 1824 Christopher Lopdell, of Athenry, is recorded as a resident proprietor in county Galway. John Lopdell held lands in the parish of Killinny, barony of Kiltartan, in the 1850s. There appears to have been some internal dispute relating to the will of John Lopdell, senior, as witnessed by a report in ''Connaught Journal'' in 1823. In the 1830s townlands in Kilconickny parish are recorded as being part of the Lopdell estate. Lands belonging to the estate of John Joseph Lopdell were offered for sale in the Encumbered Estates court in July 1851. In the 1850s John Lopdell was leasing a property valued at £16 from Thomas Courtney in the townland of Prospect, parish of Athenry. Captain Lopdell is recorded as the owner of over 1300 acres in county Galway in the 1870s. The Lopdell family resided at Raheen House, outside Athenry but are associated with other properties in the town also.
