Hemsworth

The Hemsworth family descend from the Reverend Thomas Hemsworth of Abbeville, county Tipperary, rector of the parish of Birr at the end of the 17th century. The Reverend Thomas married Lucy, daughter of Godfrey Boate, Justice of the King's Bench, Ireland, who held large estates in county Tipperary. One of their grandsons, William Hemsworth, settled at Loughrea, county Galway and, in 1780, married Anne Newman. A William Hemsworth was leasing a house in the townland of Woodberry, parish of Killallaghtan, barony of Kilconnell, county Galway, at the time of Griffith's Valuation. At the same time Jethro Hemsworth was the occupier of a property at Gortnakilla, parish of Ballynakill, barony of Leitrim which he was leasing from Henry Brunskill. He is recorded as residing at Rathgar, Dublin in the 1870s when he was the owner of over 200 acres in county Tipperary. In 1913 an offer from the Congested Districts Board on a small amount of land owned by Thomas Hemsworth in county Galway was accepted. The county Tipperary branch of the Hemsworth family held property in the parishes of Lorrha and Dorrha, barony of Lower Ormond county Tipperary. In March 1851, the Abbeyville estate and the lands of Ballybreen, barony of Lower Ormond, amounting to 1,785 acres, belonging to Thomas and Thomas G. Hemsworth, were advertised for sale. In July 1858, 240 acres, part of the lands of Sharragh, parish of Dorrha, the estate of Terence Cornelius John Egan, Thomas Gerrard Hemsworth, Henry Hemsworth and Patrick Meara, in the barony of Lower Ormond, was advertised for sale. In the 1870s Thomas G. Hemsworth of Abbeville, Roscrea, owned 387 acres in county Tipperary. At the same time Mrs. Elizabeth Hemsworth is recorded as owning over 500 acres in county Leitrim. An Elizabeth Hemsworth is recorded as owning property in Limerick city in Griffith's Valuation.
