McTernan

The McTernans acquired the property at Heapstown, Kilmacallan parish, in the mid-nineteenth century. They were already in possession of property in the Arigna area of County Roscommon including mining interests at Mount Allen colliery there. They held over 2500 acres in county Leitrim as well as lands in counties Roscommon and Kilkenny. There is a tradition that the family moved to Heapstown after 1832 when five members of the family died, possibly of cholera, at Mount Allen. In 1867 64 acres, formerly owned by James McTernan, in the parish of Killerry, barony of Tirerrill, was offered for sale in the Landed Estates Court by the assignees of Laurence McTernan, a deceased insolvent. This property was held under a fee farm grant from the Ramsey estate. After 1909 an offer was accepted from the Congested Districts Board for the sale of over 2000 acres by Fowler & McTernan.
