Boles/Bowles (Cork)
In 1666 Richard Boles was granted 924 acres at Moyge in the barony of Orrery and Kilmore, county Cork. From Richard's brother, Captain Thomas Boles, descend the Boles of Ahern, county Cork. According to Burke's "Landed Gentry of Ireland" (1904) the spelling of the surname of this family changed from Boles to Bowles with George Boles of Mountprospect, born 1739. His military commission spelt his name Bowles and this spelling was retained by him and his family. In 1764 he married Dorothea Hunt of Friarstown, county Limerick, and they had three sons. The youngest son, Spotswood Bowles, settled at Ahern, Conna, county Cork. At the time of Griffith's Valuation the Bowles estate was in the parishes of Aghera, Knockmourne and Mogeely, barony of Kinnatalloon and in a number of parishes in the barony of Imokilly. Bowles lands in the baronies of Imokilly, county Cork and Decies-within-Drum, county Waterford, were offered for sale in the Encumbered Estates Court in October 1858. The interest of Robert Boles, continued in the name of Henry Walter Garde and others, in lands at Kilbree and Drumsarane, barony of Imokilly, was advertised for sale in July 1864. In May 1874 George Bowles estate at Mount Prospect was advertised for sale. It was held on a lease dated 1771 from Nicholas Lysaght to George Bowles. In the 1870s Spotswood's son, George Bowles of Aherne House, Tallow, owned 1,192 acres and his brother, Spotiswood Boles of Springfield, Castlemartyr, owned 540 acres in county Cork. Robert Boles was among the principal lessors in the parish of Kilmaloda, barony of East Carbery, at the time of Griffith's Valuation. In the 1870s his representatives owned over 700 acres in county Cork.
