Potts
O’Brien writes that the Potts were a family who came from Cheshire and settled in King’s County (County Offaly) at the end of the 17th century. By the early 18th century they held land around Athlone. The Drum Heritage Group record Correen, parish of Moore, barony of Moycarn, county Roscommon as the main seat of the Potts family in the mid-19th century. It was the home of William Potts and his wife Louisa Reid, a granddaughter of Sir George Ribton 2nd baronet. In the 1850s William and John Potts owned land in the parishes of Drum and St Peters, barony of Athlone, county Roscommon. In May 1865 the estate of Joseph Trumperant Potts, 141 acres at Sladagh and Corbally, barony of Middlethird, county Tipperary, was advertised for sale. In the 1870s William Trumperant Potts of Correen Castle owned 5,813 acres in county Roscommon and 144 acres in county Westmeath. His county Westmeath estate was located in the parishes of St Mary’s Athlone and Rathconrath. In 1896 he was succeeded by his son Lieutenant Colonel John William Hastings Potts of New Court, county Westmeath. Another branch of the family built a house at Runnymeade, Ballinasloe in the 1860s. In the 1870s Henry Trumperant Potts of Runnymeade owned 535 acres in county Galway, 771 acres in county Roscommon, 855 acres in King's county (county Offaly) and 180 acres in county Westmeath. Hussey records Henry Trumperant's surname as Pottinger but this is incorrect. Runnymeade was the house also known as Clooncannon or Cloncannon. See http://www.geocities.com/u_furley/potts.html
