Butson

The Ordnance Survey Name Books record the Butson estate as the proprietor of church lands in the parish of Ardrahan in the 1830s for which John Ball of Gort acted as agent. Reverend Archdeacon Butson of Clonfert was a significant owner of land in the barony of Longford, county Galway, at the time of Griffith's valuation and also held some land in the parish of Taghmaconnell, barony of Athlone, county Roscommon. He is also recorded among the principal lessors in the parish of Kilburne, barony of Middlethird, county Waterford. In the 1870s the Butson estate amounted to over 3700 acres in county Galway as well as lands in counties Roscommon and Waterford.
