Forward (Castleforward)

Estate(s)

Name Description
Howard (Earls of Wicklow) The Earls of Wicklow held lands in Donegal through their descent from the Forward family of Castleforward, barony of Raphoe North. In the 1870s, the ''Owners' of one acre and upwards'' survey indicated the Donegal estate amounted to over 6000 acres. Hussey de Burgh, in 1878, however, puts the acreage at over 4000 acres. This estate was principally in the parishes of Allsaints and Raymoghy in the barony of Raphoe North. In 1875 the Earl of Wicklow offered over 3000 acres of his Donegal estate in the barony of Raphoe for sale in the Landed Estates Court.
Forward (Castleforward) William Forward was an MP representing St. Johnston in the parliament of Ireland. His father, John Forward, had been one of the defenders at the Siege of Derry. Roulston states that this estate comprised lands which had originally been granted to members of the Cunningham family and to William Stewart of Dundaff in the early 1600s. These estates at Castleforward in the barony of Raphoe North came into the hands of the Howard family, Earls of Wicklow, through the marriage, in 1755, of Alice Forward, William's daughter and heiress, with Ralph Howard.
