Porter (Belle Isle)
|
In the 1870s the representatives of Reverend John Grey Porter, of Belle Isle, County Fermanagh, were recorded as the owners of over 5000 acres in County Longford. The introduction to the Porter papers in the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland indicates that this land was purchased from the estate of the Earl of Belmore. Burke suggests notes that Reverend Porter was the son of John Porter, Bishop of Clogher, who died in 1819 and also notes that this estate later devolved on members of the Archdale family through their mother, Adelaide Mary, daughter of Reverend John Grey Porter. At the time of Griffiths Valuation in the 1850s, Reverend Porter was among the principal lessors in the parishes of Columbkille, Barony of Granard and Clongesh, barony of Longford.
