Aughry was the original part of the Nisbit estate which later centred on Derrycarne demesne. The castle at Aughry was built by Maj. John Nisbet who had come from Scotland. This castle was burnt during the Jacobite wars in the 1690s and Maj. Nisbet's wife, who was a Crofton of Mote Park, county Roscommon, was killed.
