A Gaelic chieftain family resident in county Cavan for generations. One branch of the family held extensive lands in both counties Meath and Cavan. From the mid-18th century their main residence was at Baltrasna, Oldcastle, county Meath. The county Cavan estate was located in the parishes of Denn, Kilbride, Kilmore, Crosserlough and Mullagh. This family have a common ancestry with the family of Adams O’Reilly of Roebuck, county Cavan. Other members of O’Reilly families held lands in the parishes of Annagh, Annagelliff and Larah in the mid-19th century and a long list of O’Reillys who held more than one acre but less than 500 acres appears in the landowners of 1876.
