Hassard (Gardenhill & Tuam)

The Hassards were granted land in county Fermanagh at the end of the 17th century settling at Gardenhill, county Fermanagh and Toam [Tuam, county Cavan] and by the early 19th century a branch was resident at Glenville, county Waterford. In the mid-18th century Jason Hassard was agent to the Pleydell estate. By the mid-19th century members of the family held lands in the county Cavan parishes of Killinagh, Templeport and Kinawley, barony of Tullyhaw. In 1876, the representatives of Alexander Jason Hassard of Gardenhill, held 3,610 acres, Richard Hassard of London held 3,749 acres, Francis John Hassard of Dublin held 539 acres and Mrs J.H. Hassard of Dublin held 342 acres, all in county Cavan.

  • Correspondence and case papers of Miss Elizabeth Pleydell concerning a Chancery suit and a case for arbitration between the representatives of the late Jason Hassard and herself. The suit concerns a lease of Gortacull, etc, in the manor of Doobally, which Hassard had granted to himself in 1793 under a power of attorney given him, as agent for the estate, by Jonathan Morton Pleydell in 1756. The case for arbitration concerns the state of accounts between Hassard and the Pleydell family which, by 1819, amounts to a debt of £2143, inclusive of interest, from the Hassards to Miss Pleydell. 1793 - 1819.
