Wright/Woodwright

According to Burkes the Wrights, located in the area west of Monaghan town, descend from a Cromwellian soldier James Wright, who was granted lands in the vicinity of Gola, parish of Tedavnet. Shirley states that James Wright purchased his estate from Thomas Coote of Cootehill, the purchase confirmed by a patent of 1684. James Wright married twice, first to Jane Owen and secondly to Mary Slacke. He left his estate to the eldest son of his second marriage, Joseph of Gola, whose descendants died out following the death of Joseph’s granddaughter Euphemia Wright in 1775. By the will of Euphemia’s father, also named Joseph Wright, Gola passed to Joseph son of his cousin Henry of Monaghan. Henry married Emily Burgess in 1730. Henry and Emily Wright had two sons Joseph who died childless in 1793 and William Cairnes Wright who eventually succeeded to Gola. His only child and heiress Elizabeth Isabella married Lieutenant James Wood who assumed the additional name of Wright following their marriage in 1812. In the 19th century the family of Wood-Wright/Woodwright owned the Gola estate in the parishes of Tedavnet and Aghabog. It amounted to over 3,700 acres in 1876. Other members of the Wright family owned land and properties in the parishes of Errigal Trough, Tedavnet and Monaghan. In 1858, the estate of William Nixon Wright at Lisabuck, held from the Bishop of Clogher, was advertised for sale in the Encumbered Estates Court. Joseph Wright of Kilnacloy on the outskirts of Monaghan town was a solicitor and well known land agent in the late 19th century. He was a son of Henry Wright, a member of a branch of this family who were solicitors and clergyman in the town of Monaghan, including Joseph Wright, solicitor and proprietor of the Kilmore estate. In 1876, the representatives of James Wright of Monaghan and Thomas Edward Wright of Monaghan owned 436 acres and 350 acres respectively. The Wrights of Carrachor, parish of Tedavnet, county Monaghan, are a branch of the family that settled at Gola in the 17th century.
