Tuite (Sonna)
This family were established at Sonnagh from the early 17th century. Oliver Tuite of Sonna was created a baronet in June 1622. The 7th Baronet was murdered at Sonnagh in 1783. Hugh Tuite of Sonna was the third son of the 6th Baronet and his wife, Mary Morgan of Cottlestown, County Sligo. Their son, Hugh Morgan Tuite, was a landowner in six county Westmeath parishes at the time of Griffith’s Valuation (publ. 1854), principally those of Kilmacnevan, Templeoran and Rathconrath. His only son Joseph owned 7,391 acres in county Westmeath and 2,307 acres in county Longford in the 1870s while his grandson Henry, a minor, owned 1,490 acres in county Westmeath. Lands in county Longford held in fee and the life interest of Joseph Tuite in thousands of acres in county Westmeath were for sale in the Landed Estates Court in July 1876. In 1876, Sir Mark Anthony Henry Tuite, baronet, of Sonagh, county Westmeath, is recorded as the owner of one townland in the parish of Kilruane, county Tipperary. The Sonagh estate in county Westmeath amounted to over 7000 acres at the same time. Hugh Morgan Tuite was among the principal lessors in the parish of Mostrim, County Longford, at the time of Griffiths Valuation in the 1850s.
