Phillips (Mount Rivers)

This family of Phillips was settled in county Tipperary from at least the mid 18th century. [Thomas Phelps was granted over 1,700 acres in the barony of Owney and Arra in 1666]. Evan Phillips of Mount Rivers, county Tipperary, married a daughter of Nicholas Weekes of Brickfield, county Limerick. ''The Limerick Advertiser'' (13 July 1819) records the death of Mrs Phillips, a widow, in 1819. In 1775, Stumble Phillips of Mount Phillips married a Miss [Susan] Lee of Barna (''The Hibernian Magazine'' 1775). ''The Freeman's Journal'' (1 Jan 1836) records the death of Susanna, widow of Stumble Phillips, barrister-at -aw, of Mount Phillips, aged 88 years, at her grandson's residence, Hurdlestown, county Clare. In 1867 Windham Gabbett, son of Daniel Gabbett of Bellefield, county Limerick, married Fanny, daughter and co heiress of Richard Phillips of Mount Rivers. At the time of Griffith's Valuation, Richard Phillips held land in the parishes of Kilcomenty, Killoscully, Kilnarath and Kilvellane, barony of Owney and Arra, county Tipperary and William Phillips held land in the parish of Kilvellane, barony of Owney and Arra.
