Dobbyn
Morris states that the Dobbyns were a family of great antiquity in Waterford. Grogan notes that claims have been made that they were one of the original Norman families to settle in Waterford although this does not appear to be supported by any written document. It is clear that from the fifteenth century onwards they were among the politically influential families. Sadleir, referring to the 1770s, mentions "Ambrose Worthivill, of Amberhill,, married to a Miss Dobbyn" and "Hannibal Dobbyn, of Ballynakill, nephew to the Old Recorder". In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries the family were still active in local municipal politics and in the legal profession in the city. Michael Dobbyn was among the principal lessors in the parish of Kill St. Nicholas, barony of Gaultiere, at the time of Griffith's Valuation.
