Long (East Carbery)

In 1666 Colonel Thomas Long was granted lands in counties Meath, Westmeath and in the barony of Carbery, county Cork. Richard J. Long was among the principal lessors in the parish of Desertserges, barony of East Carbery, at the time of Griffith's Valuation. A Richard Long is recorded as the proprietor of over 500 acres in county Cork in the 1870s. In 1814 Leet noted Hollyhill House, adjacent to Skibbereen, as the seat of Richard Long. This possibly refers to Westfield, located in Hollyhill townland. Members of the Long and Gillman families, among others, were the owners of property in the parish of Caheragh, barony of West Carbery, offered for sale in the Landed Estates Court in November 1861. Richard Long had been among the principal lessors in this parish at the time of Griffith's Valuation.
