At the time of Griffith's Valuation, Edward Mathews was in possession of an estate at Derryvunlam, parish of Ballynakill, barony of Leitrim, county Galway. Edward P. Matthews is recorded as owning over 1100 acres in county Galway in the 1870s. At the same time Henry Matthews with an address in London was the owner of over 600 acres.
