Burke (Burkeville)

The estate of Theobald Burke of Burkeville, barony of Longford, county Galway was offered for sale in the Encumbered Estates Court in July 1852. This family of Burkes of Ballinruane or Ballinrooaun were descended, like their neighbours, the Burkes of Clonreiligh, in the same parish of Killoran, from Ulick carragh MacHubert Burke, head of the MacHubert Burkes of Isertkelly who was transplanted to that parish and those lands in the 1650s. Patrick Burke of Ballinruane was a generous benefactor to the Franciscan friars at Meelick and his death and that of his young son Ambrose and his wife Dorothy in the mid 1700s is recorded in the friary's obituary book.
