William Stawell held this property in fee at the time of Griffith's Valuation, when it was valued at £70. The original castle dates from the 15th century but the property was extensively re-modelled in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries by the Stawell family. Lewis records it as the seat of Mrs. Stawell in 1837. In 1906 it was the property of Col. William Stawell and valued at £182. It was partially damaged by fire in 1920 following its occupation by British force during the War of Independence. In 1942 the Irish Tourist Association Survey recorded a detailed history of the castle and its association with the Stawell family. In recent years some of the building has been restored. |
