Gunning (Kilroe)
|
John J. Gunning, tanner of Galway, bought land in the parish of Kilcoona, barony of Clare, county Galway, after the Famine and ran a flour milling business at Inish where the mill house and mill are still extant. He appears to have been living in Lydican House in the 1830s and the sale rental for the Martin of Ballynahinch estate shows him occupying a dwelling house and offices in Galway. In the 1870s he owned 2,284 acres in the county. His property was inherited by his nephew James Alcorn who lived in the locality until the 1920s.
