Name Description
Story The Storys of counties Cavan and Tyrone descend from John Story of Bingfield Hall, near Hexham, Northumberland, who came to Ireland in the 17th century. Three generations of the county Cavan branch were clergymen, including Bishop Joseph Story of Kilmore and his wife Sophia Gore, daughter of Sir William Gore of Castle Gore, county Mayo. The Story family were settled in county Cavan from the mid 18th century. In the mid-19th century members of the Story family held land in the parishes of Drumlane, Kilmore, Templeport, Ballintemple, Annagh and Lurgan, county Cavan while Robert Story or Storey, was one of the principal lessors in the parish of Cloone, barony of Carrigallen, county Leitrim. Bingfield House, north east of Crossdoney, county Cavan is an early to mid-18th century three story mansion, built by Archdeacon Story of Kilmore and the family were still resident there in the early 20th century. In 1876, Joseph Story of Bingfield owned 2,415 acres in county Cavan and 1,479 acres in county Leitrim, while Sarah and James Story of Ture Lodge, parish of Drumlane, owned 814 and 407 acres respectively. A number of family members emigrated to New Zealand in the early 20th century.
