Browne (Breaghwy) | A junior branch of the Brownes of the Neale, county Mayo, was located in the parish of Breaghwy in the barony of Carra, county Mayo, from the late 17th century. Although recorded as resident early in the 19th century, they appear to have followed military careers for much of the 19th century. Their estate of 1689 acres was advertised for sale in the Encumbered Estates' Court in 1855 at the petition of John William Rhodes, who held the advertised lands at the time of Griffith's Valuation. However in 1876 the Brownes owned 1577 acres so they were able to redeem most of their estate. |
