Wilson (Daramona)

Estate(s)

Name Description
Wilson (Daramona) In the 1870s John Wilson of Street, County Westmeath was the owner of over 3000 acres in the county. The Wilsons were a County Antrim family who had acquired the Daramona estate near Street in the mid-19th century. Burke suggests that their ancestor had landed in Ireland among the supporters of William of Orange. In the nineteenth century members of the family married into several other well known midlands families including the Edgeworths of Kilshrewly. John Wilson’s son was the well-known astronomer, William Edward Wilson, who lived and worked at Daramona until his death in 1908. O'Brien suggests that, some years after his death, his family went to live at Kilnahard Castle, County Cavan and later moved to England.
Wilson (Currygrane) In the 1870s, Hussey de Burgh recorded James Wilson as the proprietor of over 1000 acres in County Longford. The Longford estate was centred on Currygrane House. Hussey de Burgh also records Wilson’s Dublin address as Frascati House, Blackrock. Burke indicates that James M. Wilson was the 4th son of William Wilson of Daramona House, Streete, County Westmeath.
