Briscoe (Riverdale)
|
A family of Elizabethan settlers based at the manor of Rathleen, King’s County (Offaly) at the beginning of the 18th century. Edward John Briscoe, born 1770, is described as ‘of Riverdale, county Westmeath and of Screggan, King’s County’. He married Frances daughter of Thomas Fetherstonhaugh of Bracklyn, county Westmeath (Burke's Landed Gentry 1904, although this marriage is not recorded in the Fetherstonhaugh entry). From their two eldest sons descend the Briscoes of Riverdale and the Briscoes of Grangemore and Lakeview. Griffith’s Valuation for county Westmeath (publ. 1854) records the Briscoe estate in the parishes of Killulagh and Killucan. Lands held by John Fetherstonhaugh Briscoe at Baskin High and Low with other lands amounting to 378 acres held in fee simple were for sale in the Landed Estates Court in July 1878 and again in February 1884 after the death of John F Briscoe. In the 1870s Edward John Briscoe of Riverdale and Screggan, owned 2,836 acres in King’s County while John E Briscoe of Grangemore, Killucan owned 379 acres in county Westmeath.
