The Delameres were a prominent land owning family in county Westmeath in the 15th and 16th centuries. Woods traces the history of this family in County Westmeath from the 15th century. Peter Delamare, High Sheriff of the county in 1773, son of Peter Delamare of Ballinafad MD (died 1750), married twice but had no children and died in 1805. The Delamare lands at Killeen (Castletownkindalan), Knightswood (Leny) and Rathlavarragh [Rathlevanagh, parish of Portnashangan] were sold to Sir Benjamin Chapman in 1785. Walter Nugent Delamere of Multifarnham held the townlands of Culleenabohoge and Culleendarragh, parish of Leny, from Sir Montague L. Chapman at the time of Griffith’s Valuation (publ. 1854) amounting to almost 500 acres. He died in 1874. Fitzherbert Walter Delamere was the son of Walter Delamere. This family are not mentioned as landowners in the 1870s.
