The title of Earl of Abercorn in the Scottish peerage was conferred on James Hamilton in 1603. The title Duke of Abercorn, in the peerage of Ireland, was conferred on his descendant, also James Hamilton, in the 1860s. He served two terms as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.

Hamilton (Abercorn)	In the 1870s the estates of the Duke of Abercorn in Ireland included almost 16,000 acres in County Donegal and over 47,000 in County Tyrone where the family seat, Baronscourt, was located. At the time of Griffiths Valuation, in the 1850s, the estate was among the principal lessors in the parishes of Raymoghy and Taughboyne in the barony of Raphoe North, County Donegal.
