The title of Earl of Abercorn in the Scottish peerage was conferred on James Hamilton in 1603. The title Duke of Abercorn, in the peerage of Ireland, was conferred on his descendant, also James Hamilton, in the 1860s. He served two terms as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.
