Hill (Kilmacrenan) | Lord George Hill was among the principal lessors in the parish of Tullaghobegley at the time of Griffiths Valuation. In the 1870s he owned over 24,000 acres in County Donegal. Hill had purchased his Gweedore estate in the 1830s. He wished to modernize both farming practices and landholding on the estate but was perceived as a harsh landlord. George Hill was the fifth son of Arthur Hill, 2nd Marquis of Downshire and his wife Mary Sandys, whose seat was at Hillsborough Castle in County Down. Lady Hill was among the principal lessors in the parish of Raphoe, barony of Raphoe North, at the time of Griffiths Valuation in the 1850s. Her estate is estimated at almost 1000 acres in the Landowner's Survey of the 1870s. |
