Dopping/Dopping-Hepenstal (Derrycassan)

Burke suggests that the Dopping family became associated with the Derrycassan estate through the marriage of Anthony Dopping and Alice D’Arcy, whose family had previously owned the property. Anthony Dopping was the son of Anthony Dopping, Bishop of Ossory, 1740-43. The family became Dopping-Hepenstal through the marriage, in 1858, of Ralph Dopping and Diane Hepenstal of Altadore, County Wicklow.
In 1878, Henry Dopping owned 193 acres in county Cavan and 690 acres in county Longford. Major R.A. Dopping-Hepenstal of Derrycassin owned over 1700 acres at the same time. At the time of Griffiths Valuation in the 1850s, he was among the principal lessors in the parish of Abbeylara, barony of Granard, County Longford.
In the 1850s the estate was also among the principal lessors in the parish of Columbkille, barony of Granard. Hussey de Burgh recorded Major Ralph Dopping-Hepenstal as the owner of over 1700 acres in County Longford as well as over 1500 in County Wicklow.
In the mid-19th century Henry Dopping held the townland of Arnaghan, 193 acres in the parish of Scrabby, barony of Tullyhunco, county Cavan. He was descended from the Right Reverend Anthony Dopping, Bishop of Ossory. He was the second son of Ralph Dopping of Erne Head, Derrycassan, county Longford and Catherine, daughter of Philip Smyth of Grousehall, Loughduff, county Cavan. In 1836, he married Frances Jessop of Mount Jessop, county Longford. In 1822, his older brother John of Derrycassan married Frances, daughter of James Henry Cottingham of Somerville, county Cavan.

Smyth (Grousehall)

Philip Smyth of Grousehall, Loughduff, county Cavan, had a daughter who married Ralph Dopping of Erne Head, Derrycassan, county Longford in 1798. The Tithe Applotment books record a Mathew Smyth of Grousehall, Drumlumman while Griffith's Valuation records a James and John Smith occupiers of holdings of 13 and 17 acres respectively. The censuses of 1901 and 1911 record a John Smyth, farmer, and his family resident in the townland of Grousehall.

Dopping (Lowtown)

In 1703, Reverend Anthony Dopping purchased over 200 acres of Ballyeighter, barony of Farbill, county Westmeath, from the Trustees of forfeited estates for £500. Anthony Dopping of Lowtown, county Westmeath, married Alice daughter of James D’Arcy of Hyde Park, county Westmeath and Derrycassan, county Longford. She brought a fortune of £6,000. Their eldest son Samuel Dopping married Anne Kelly and had a son William. This was the Lowtown branch of the family. At the time of Griffith’s Valuation (publ. 1854) Anne Dopping was the immediate lessor of three townlands in the parish of Killucan. William Dopping (1812-1897), [librarian, Parliament House, Melbourne], Australia, owned an estate of 1,171 acres in county Westmeath in the mid-1870s. In 1843, he married Jane, daughter of Reverend Cecil Crampton, rector of Killucan and they had two children Antoine and Victoria. Ralph Dopping of Erne Head, Derrycassan was the second son of Anthony and Alice Dopping. Their eldest son John inherited Derrycassan and their younger son Henry lived at Erne Head. At the time of Griffiths Valuation in the 1850s, he was among the principal lessors in the parish of Abbeylara, barony of Granard.
