Thompson (Ford Lodge)

In the mid-19th century the Thompson estate in county Cavan was mainly located in the parish of Annagh, barony of Tullygarvey. In 1876 Theophilus Thompson J.P. of Ford Lodge, on the outskirts of Cavan town, owned 1,187 acres in the county. Theophilus was the youngest son of Francis Thompson of Killybandrick, county Cavan, and was called to the Irish Bar in 1846. The Law Times reported his death in 1888, stating that he was married twice, firstly to Isabella Olive Knipe and secondly to Marie, eldest daughter of Captain Robert Gordon-Cumming, 56th Regiment. He had two daughters. In 1910, Walford refers to his only surviving child Olive Gordon Thompson of Ford Lodge, Leggykelly and Killabandrick. These two townlands were held from the Reverend Venables and his wife Georgiana Mary Whyte-Venables of Redhills.

Venables (Redhills)

In the mid-19th century the Reverend Edmund Burke Venables, son of the Reverend James Venables of Dorset, held an estate comprised of 20 townlands in the parish of Annagh, county Cavan as recorded in Griffith’s Valuation. In 1847, he married Georgina Mary Enderby, niece and heiress of Francis Melville Whyte to whom this estate previously belonged. In 1878, the Reverend Venables of Redhills owned 2,532 acres in county Cavan and 797 acres in county Tyrone. He died in 1894. In 1905, the Reverend Arthur Thellusson Oddie assumed the name of Whyte Venables by royal license on succeeding to the Redhills estate in county Cavan. He was a grandson of the Reverend James Venables. He died in 1929.

Whyte (Redhills)

The Whytes of Redhills, Belturbet, county Cavan, descend from Francis Whyte who was Chief Secretary to Viscount Grandison, Lord Deputy of Ireland 1616-1621. He married Dorcas Newcomen and their son Thomas Whyte settled at Redhills and was Lord of the manor of Ballynagrane, county Tyrone. The descendants of Thomas Whyte married with members of the Saunderson, Edgeworth and Napper families. Colonel Francis Whyte of Redhills died in 1779 and left his estate to his sister Anne, wife of John White of Rathgonan and Loghill, county Limerick. Their grandson Francis Melville White died in 1833 leaving his estates to his niece Georgina Mary Enderby. In 1847, Georgina married the Reverend Edmund B. Venables. Most of the estate was in the parish of Annagh, county Cavan.
