Betty/Beatty (Lakefield)

Estate(s)

Name Description
Betty/Beatty (Lakefield) In the mid-19th century the representatives of James Be[a]tty held most of five townlands in the parish of Templeport, barony of Tullyhaw, county Cavan while William Be[a]tty held one. This property was located south west of Bawnboy and close to Lakefield Lough. They were descendants of the Reverend Veaitch Betty of Lakefield, Templeport, who made his will on 16 July 1783, in which he mentions his sons the Reverend Rowland and William. Lakefield is marked on the first edition Ordnance Survey map. Its valuation was recorded as £1.10 shillings in Griffith’s Valuation when James Dolan was resident. The Reverend Veaitch died in August 1785 according to The Gentleman’s Magazine. The Reverend Rowland of Lakefield died in August 1817. William Thomas Betty also held three townlands in the parish of Castleterra in the mid-19th century. There was a dispute between Betty family members over the lands of Kilsob, parish of Templeport, in the 1870s. In 1876 Captain William Francis Betty of the 6th Dragoon Guards owned 346 acres in county Cavan and William Thomas Betty owned 401 acres. This surname is sometimes spelt Beatty.
