| Fitzgibbon (Castlegrace) | The Fitzgibbon family, known as the White Knight, were established in county Tipperary, from the 15th century. By the early 17th century they also held land in county Limerick at Ballynahinch and Ballyscaddan. David Fitzgibbon was Governor of Ardfinnan Castle in the mid 17th century. At the end of the 17th century his son Maurice Fitzgibbon, a Jacobite, was settled at Clashmore. He married Ellen McCraith in 1693 and they had 2 sons, Gibbon of Clashmore, [county ?] and Philip of Castlegrace, parish of Tullaghorton, barony of Iffa and Offa West. Philip married Aphra, daughter and co heiress of Robert Sargent of Castle Grace. The Fitzgibbons continued to hold Castlegrace throughout the 18th century. In the 19th century the family resided at Crohana, Stoneyford, county Kilkenny. The ruins of Castlegrace are marked on the first edition Ordnance Survey map. The Grubbs built a mansion house closeby in the mid 19th century. |
