Name Description
Burke (Elm Hall) This family descend from John Burke and his second wife, Lucinda Plunkett of Bettyfield, county Roscommon. From their eldest son, Joseph, descend the Burkes of Auberies, Suffolk and from their younger son, Peter, the Burkes of Elm Hall. In 1795 Peter Burke married Anne Dowdall by whom he had two sons, John, father of Peter of Elm Hall and of Sir Bernard Burke, Ulster King of Arms and author of Burke's Peerage, Landed Gentry etc. Peter and Anne's second son was Joseph Burke of Elm Hall, a Queen's Counsel and Master in Chancery, whose collection of sale rentals from the land courts 1849-1864 is now in the National Library. Peter Burke of London owned 113 acres in county Tipperary in the 1870s.
