Bryan (Gurteen)

The Reverend William Bryan of Gurteen, county Tipperary, son of Thomas Bryan and Elizabeth Aldwell, married Elizabeth, daughter of John Craven Chadwick of Ballinardy, county Tipperary in 1827. At the time of Griffith's Valuation Reverend William held land in the parish of Kilvemnon. In March 1858 his estate of 82 acres at Ballycullen, barony of Slievardagh, was advertised for sale. The Freeman's Journal reported that it was purchased in trust by Matthew Hawe. In the 1870s his son Thomas Bryan of Gurteen owned 609 acres in county Tipperary. Ballycullen was held from the Bradshaw family and many of the tenants held leases dating from the 1830s from Basil Bryan. The rental includes references to Patrick Bryan eldest son of William Bryan of Ballycullen and Thomas Bryan eldest son of the Reverend William Bryan of Gurteen.
