Callaghan (Lotabeg)

Daniel Callaghan, Member of Parliament for Cork city on a number of occasions, was the second son of Daniel Callaghan, a Cork merchant, and his wife Mary Barry. Born in 1786 he lived at Lotabeg in the first half of the 19th century and died there in 1849. The Callaghans leased Convamore to the Hare family Earls of Listowel from about 1800. At the time of Griffith's Valuation the representatives of Daniel Callaghan owned an estate in the parish of Ballyhooly, barony of Fermoy, county Cork while Frederick M. O'Callaghan held an estate comprised of at least 7 townlands in the parish of Inagh, barony of Inchiquin, county Clare and five townlands in the parish of Carrigtohill, barony of Barrrymore, county Cork. In the 1870s sources Frederick Marcus's surname is spelt Callaghan and his addresses are given as Cork and Bath. He owned 4318 acres in county Clare and 1025 acres in county Cork. In July 1850 estates held in fee simple by Frederick M. Callaghan within four miles distance of Cork city were advertised for sale. In July 1853 the estate of Frederick Marcus Callaghan at Convamore and other lands in the barony of Fermoy were also advertised for sale.
