Tobin (Ballincollig)
|
In 1835 Thomas Tobin (1807-1881), the son of a Liverpool merchant of Irish extraction, came to county Cork to manage the gunpowder mills at Ballincollig, county Cork, recently purchased from the Board of Ordnance. He married Catherine Ellis of Cumberland and they lived in the former Superintendant's House beside the mills. Thomas Tobin played an active role in the commercial and cultural life of Cork city and was knighted in 1855. At the time of Griffith's Valuation Thomas Tobin held a small estate in the vicinity of Ballincollig, barony of East Muskerry. In the 1870s he owned only 11 acres in county Cork.
