Locke (Newcastle)

The Reverend Thomas Locke was located in the Newcastle area, barony of Glenquin, county Limerick in the late 18th century. In 1793, Harriet, daughter of the Reverend Thomas Locke of Newcastle, married the Reverend Julius Drake Brockman and had a family of 14 children. One of their daughters, Caroline, married Captain Boyle Travers of county Cork. Harriet's sister-in-law, Anne Drake Brockman, married the Reverend William Thomas Locke of Newcastle, county Limerick. At the time of Griffith's Valuation the representatives of Thomas and Robert Locke held lands in the parish of Mahoonagh, barony of Glenquin and John and Mary Lock held lands in the parishes of Clonelty and Monagay in the same barony. John C. Locke held land in the parish of Kilmeedy, barony of Connello Upper. Lands at Ballybrowne, parish of Clonelty, were advertised for sale in October 1850. In February 1851 Lands belonging to John and Thomas Locke were offered for sale in the Encumbered Estates Court but the sale was adjourned due to lack of offers. At the time of Griffith's Valuation John W. T. Locke held a house in Bishops Street, Newcastle, valued at £10+. In the 1870s John William T. Locke of Shrewsbury, England owned 872 acres in the county while Thomas and Mary Locke of Dublin, owned 464 and 131 acres respectively. In June 1877 the estate of William Thomas Locke amounting to 595 acres in the barony of Glenquin was advertised for sale. Property owned by William Locke and Thomas McCarthy O'Connor in the barony of Glenquin, county Limerick, was advertised for sale in the Land Judges' Court in April 1888.
