Griffith (Sligo)
|
The Griffith family held land in County Sligo although they also had merchant interests in the town. McTernan notes that they had previously resided in the semi-fortified residence at Ballincar before moving to Ballytivnan house, which they occupied until the 1830s. The property in Tireragh was leased from the Cooper estate. Henry Griffith was one of the principal lessors in the parish of Drumard at the time of Griffith's Valuation. He offered for sale several premises in Sligo town in the Landed Estates Court in October 1866 and again in February 1867. In the 1870s William Griffith was the owner of almost 2000 acres in county Sligo. In 1911 an offer from the Congested Districts Board for the purchase of this estate was accepted.
