Maxwell (Charleville & Islandmore)

In 1835 Robert Maxwell of Charleville, county Cork, married Lucy Le Poer Trench, sister of the 3rd Earl of Clancarty. She died in 1839 and in 1842 Robert Maxwell of Islandmore, county Limerick, married Elizabeth May and they had a number of children. Archives in both the National Library of Ireland and the National Archives, Dublin, document the estates of Robert Maxwell in counties Cork, Tipperary and Limerick. The maps in the National Library show Robert Maxwell holding land in Graigue and Gutheragh, parish of Rathgoggan, barony of Orrery & Kilmore, county Cork, Ballyglass Upper (where John Mulcahy had a large residence), parishes of Clonpet & Cordangan, barony of Clanwilliam, county Tipperary, Islandmore Demesne (includes lithograph of the house, in Maxwell hands), Effin and Ballincolly, Ballygubba North and Tankardstown, barony of Coshma and Ballymacshaneboy and Ballyshanedehey, parish of Kilquane, barony of Coshlea, county Limerick. In total he held 1170 acres in these 3 counties in the mid 19th century. In the 1870s Robert James Maxwell of Fitzwilliam Square, Dublin, owned 1,049 acres in county Limerick, 180 acres in county Cork and 335 acres in county Tipperary.
