Duke | The Duke family were granted lands in Sligo in the mid 17th century through the patronage of Richard Coote, Lord Collooney. They are noted as tituladoes in 1659 'Census of Ireland' and also in the Hearth Money Rolls. In 1866 over 400 acres of the Taaffe estate in the barony of Corran, which was offered for sale in the Landed Estates court, was being leased by Alexander Duke. The Duke family owned almost 5000 acres in County Sligo in 1876 and 125 acres in county Roscommon. At the time of Griffith's Valuation Maria Duke held land in the parish of Cloonygormican, barony of Ballymoe, county Roscommon. In 1906 the Duke family held almost 400 acres of untenanted land in the barony of Corran, county Sligo. The life interest of John Duke in lands in the barony of Leitrim, county Leitrim, was sold in the Landed Estates Court in March 1866. The purchaser was Mr. Whitton, in trust. |
