Mapother | A Dorset family, established in county Roscommon since Elizabethan times, who intermarried with the Crofton, Ormsby, Nugent and Kelly families. In 1828 Edward Mapother of Kilteevan was a member of the Grand Panel of county Roscommon. At the time of Griffith's Valuation the Mapother estate was in the parishes of Kilteevan and Roscommon, barony of Ballintober South. In the 1870s the Mapother estate amounted to 1,777 acres. Edward Dillon Mapother (1835-1908) studied medicine at Queen's College, Galway and became an eminent surgeon at St. Vincent's Hospital, Dublin. |
